The collection consists of 12 issues of a hand written and illustrated newspaper issued June 3-September 9 by Betsy Gilmer of Hampden-Sydney, Va. Four of the final issues are mimeographed. The papers record local news in Black Bottom, a section of Hampden-Sydney. Gilmer relates news about friends, family, and neighbors (many of whom are professors at Hampden Sydney including J.D. Eggleston). She includes cartoons, jokes, want ads, weather, and "News of the Boys" in the service. The front page of the June 9th issue is devoted to "D-Day." Other topics include church events, voting for Dewey, promoting of bond and blood drives, and a brief mention of German P.O.W.'s working in the local fields.
